Labels, categories, population groups, demographics, or whatever you want to call a collection of individuals is a method used by people who want to control or disassociate with that collection of individuals. In general, we use Identity Politics to determine how to approach an individual. I will use the term ‘label(s)’ for the remainder of this article because I am not writing all the synonyms.
Parents use labels to justify specific behaviors in their children. When my parents were growing up you were male or female and either good or bad. When I was growing up you were either male or female and you made good choices or bad choices and suffered the consequences of the bad choices. This was when parents parented their children. As I raised my children I noticed my peers did not share the same techniques of child rearing as their parents did and I was looked upon as to strict because I agreed with the way my mother raised me. As I watch my grandchildren being raised I see parents who are raising their children as male, female or other and assuming every choice they made is a good choice because their child is good the world is bad.
Along the way the differences in parenting was based on the label created to describe the child: Millennial, Generation X, and even the satirical Snow Flake identity. Not once, that I know of, has the behavior of the child been associate with the laziness of the parent.
When I was growing up, my siblings and I did not have a lot of things that the other children had and we came out very well. Even though my parents divorced they both became successful and co-parented without “co-parenting” being a thing that had to be learned. Yes, I grew up with corporal punishment, prayer in school, and not worrying about what other people did because I was to busy doing my thing.
My parents grew up with “Colored Only” signs other separate and unequal signs but that did not stop them from pressing forward. Perhaps this is why LABELS BECAME IMPORTANT.
If people of color are succeeding despite segregation and persecution perhaps they need a reason to stop trying.
- LABEL: You are a nigger! It was offensive but it did not stop people.
- LABEL: You are OPPRESSED, held back by the White man. This got their attention.
- THE CONCEPT formulated was this: You are black and White people will not let you succeed.
Over the years this concept has been fine tuned. A specific type of “White Man” became the source of all problems that plagued the Black community- The Rich Republican White Male. The fact that people of color were in schools that lacked resources was irrelevant because they had “trusted worthy Democrats” telling them what they needed to know.
The lies being presented were and are so foolish to Republicans that they never challenged them. WHY WOULD ANYONE BELIEVE WHAT DEMOCRATS WERE SAYING WHEN HISTORY CONTRADICTS THEM?
If you repeat something often enough you will believe it. A morbidly obese woman will walk on a beach in a thong and think she is sexy because he has convinced herself that she is and no one would dare tell her she looks unhealthy; the same is true for a woman that is nothing but bones.
Black people believe they are oppressed because of rich White Republican men because they have been told this all of their lives and never doubted the rich White Democrat men who told them.
I HATE LABELS BUT I share post, articles and such on social media that use labels to make a point.
- ROBERT SMALLS a BLACK CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE IN THE 1800s
- DR MILDRED JEFFERSON The first Black Woman to graduate from Harvard (1951) and very pro-life
- BLACK BOY I Q SCORES
- THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN TO own a luxury car dealership
There are many stories about how we, Black people, succeeded despite. (I consider myself a success story., because I rejected the label of abused spouse, divorced mother.) Successful people don’t acknowledge labels, however, it is important that -those who can- go into the box, so to speak, and help others get out. We do this by sharing the truths we know and by using the labels many know to grab their attention. In order for a person to see their real identity we must call them by the label they know then we can show them how to peel that label off!
