SONG OF SOLOMON 1:2-4
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
KISS ME- ANOINT ME -DRAW ME
As I begin studying the Song of Songs, believed to be written by King Solomon, I am once again reminded of the significance of the words used. Many commentators state that Song of Solomon is a love song between a man and a woman, I cannot disagree with that interpretation; but, I also can see how it can be interpreted as the relationship that Christ has with the church, particularly each individual person.
AN ALLEGORY
Are the words allegorical? Like the book “Hinds Feet In High Places” by Hannah Hunard. As you read it your brain thinks it is the story of a young deer that overcomes fear, your heart sees the woman. As your heart, your soul, overrides what your brain is interpreting you see how the Lord guides you through the difficulties in your life.
2 SAMUEL 22:33-34
God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
If you read Song of Solomon literally using your brain you will see the obvious but it is also important to look deeper.
KISS ME
The Shulamite woman wants to “Kiss him with kisses’. This was played out by the “Sinner Woman” who lavished Jesus with an expensive oil and loved him with everything she had. She kissed his feet.
LUKE 7:38 (King James Version)
And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
To kiss represents the establishment of a relationship. It is the Hebrew word “nāshq”, the Greek word “kataphileō”; it means to fasten, to connect. A biblical kiss, nāshq or kataphileō, is not a script writers tongue wagging perlude to other things. The Shulamite woman made contact with the Shepherd; the Sinner woman made contact with Jesus; we are to establish a relationship with our Lord and Savior as well as other Believers.
2 CORINTHIANS 13:12
Greet one another with an holy kiss.
ANOINT ME
I was taught the anointing represented “yoke destroying, burden removing power”. Many of the believers I grew up with spiritually carry with them, at all times, a bottle of oil- I don’t. I have had oil placed on me and I have poured oil on myself but that was before I studied the word.
To anoint is to cover it is representative of a particular relationship. Have you ever heard a person say “I am covered by the blood”? What that person is saying is: “When God sees me He sees the blood of Jesus and provides everything I need.” Father God provides everything a person needs based on purpose; these visible gifts are seen by others. There are people who are catalyst for strife, trouble makers, they are covered, anointed, with hate.
JAMES 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
When we enter into a relationship with Father God through Jesus Christ we are covered, anointed. There is no specific ointment needed, the Old Covenant speaks of olive oil whereas the woman who anointed Jesus used an expensive oil.
Christ means anointed, Jesus is the Anointed On; “thy name is as ointment”. Song of Solomon speaks of “good ointments,” plural meaning there is more than one; James declares every good and perfect gift comrs from Father God. When we enter a personal relationship with Jesus we recieve the covering, anointing, good gifts, from Father God.
In a healthy realtionship there is mutual giving. I give you what I have, expensive oil, and you give me what You have, good and perfect gifts. As long as we stay within the boundaries of our relationship with Father God we can receive what He is giving.
Psalm 91:1-3
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
When we are covered with oil it is symbolic of our being under the protection of our Father God so that we can carryout whatever he has purposed us to do. When people see your goodnes they are seeing the anointing.
EXODUS 34:5-7, 29
Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
It is the oil, the anointing that will attract people to you so that you can tell people about the Lord.
Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.
“Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.”
In verse three we see that virgins are attracted to the anointing. A virgin is one who is not corrupted by physical ideology or behavior. This is pure love.
1 JOHN 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.
DRAW ME
JAMES 4:8
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
The anointing attracts and those with pure heart will approach. God will come closer to you as you move closer to Him. Solomon writes: “we will run after Thee”. He continues declaring: “The king has brought me into his chambers”; In Psalm 91 we see We dwell “in the secret place of the Most High, both indicate an intimate relationship.
The result of: the kiss, establishing contact; being covered, anointed; and drawing near, approaching Him as he approaches you, is an intimate relationship with God. If wine makes you feel good the love of God will make you feel even better. “We will remember thy love more than wine.”
