A friend of mine informed me that she got a text message from her church leader stating that he wanted everyone to go on a liquid fast for 24 hours. HUH?????
This church have 40 day “corporate” fast abut twice a year, they have a “Daniel fast” maybe once a twice a year and every now and then a 7 day fast but this was the first time I have ever heard of a person receiving a text message to go on an “emergency fast”.
I know people who declare they live a “fasted” life meaning they fast from 1-3 days about once a month. I used to fast for at least 3 hours every Monday until I realized how useless it was.
You cannot have a corporate fast if have the corporation, congregation, either is not participating or cheating.
If you are fasting and still doing your focus is not on denying your flesh to hear from God but on getting work done although you are hungry. My friend was not really hungry on this fast because it was a liquid fast- professional Fasters can convert almost anything into a smoothie! By the time we arrived home she had about one more hour to go on this “emergency fast”. SMH!
I confess I have not intentionally gone on a fast this year! There have been times in which I was in His presence that I did not eat or drink. I never know when I will not eat or drink but when it happens it seems I have nothing to do for those hours but be with Him; my house is unusually quiet, my phone does not ring, I have nothing pressing to do.
The Pastor of the church that I affiliate with does fast, periodically she will ask those in the congregation to join her as they feel lead to do so.
I think there is more to fasting than what many people comprehend. Fasting is more than the absence of, it is also the presence of.
2 Corinthians 5:7-8
For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
When we fast our flesh, our body, must be put to death. We must deny our personalities what it desires the most.
I have quite a few friends who keep their television on from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed, even when they leave the house it is on. Fasting food and or drink would be pointless for them because their flesh is still being fed junk.
I am always on Social Media. When I need to talk to God I have to remove the apps from my cell phone and avoid logging in from my laptop- in fact I usually go the pen and paper route so as not to be tempted.
Fasting is about not feeding the flesh so that your soul and your spirit can commune with God. Like honoring the Sabbath we have gotten so far away from the essence of Scripture that we have made the word of God ineffective.
