MY JOURNEY: CHRISTMAS 2018
I grew up in a household that celebrated Christmas. Our Christmases were not overwhelming with stuff but we did get things we needed and something we wanted. One year one of my sisters told my mother she hated her, that year my sister did not get any gifts. My mother was not a “tough” love person she simply allowed us to learn: our behavior has consequences. For me receiving gifts on Christmas day was not an assumed activity thus it never has been about the “stuff”.
December 25th, a date established by man, is the day designated to remember the miraculous birth of our Lord and Saviour, Yeshua Hamashiach. We call this day CHRISTMAS, Torah followers, Hebraic Roots Movement groups and even a few organizations that believe the Bible do not believe Christmas should be incorporated into our lives; many see it as a cult like activity, paganistic, and should not be carried out.
IS EVERYTHING CREATED BY MAN THAT IS NOT IN THE BIBLE PAGAN?
The Bible does not instruct us to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, or even New Years day (and there is a foot note to which calendar we should be going by- but that is another study). The basis of Christmas is love; if we were to get rid of Christmas we would do more harm than good.
JOHN 3:16 THE EXPANDED BIBLE
“[L- For] God loved the world so much that he gave his ·one and only [only; unique; T- only begotten; 1:14, 18] Son so that whoever believes in him may not ·be lost [T- perish], but have eternal life.
CHRISTMAS IS LOVE.
Christmas is the day we acknowledge through festive celebrations the presentation of the SON OF GOD who became the son of man. Christmas is a time to celebrate life beginning with the birth of Yeshua Hamashiach. Everyone knows “Jesus is the reason for the season”.
It is true many have gotten caught up in the materialism of the day, but even these few know WITHOUT THE SON OF GOD there would be no day of giving. Many people, such as those who are strict Torah followers or anti-Christmas, use the chaos of the malls as proof that no one should participate in the holiday. That is a problem: Is getting rid of Christmas the solution?
A MATERIALISTIC PERSON IS MATERIALISTIC ALL THE TIME
NOT JUST ON CHRISTMAS!
I find that people who have to have the biggest, latest and greatest are that way year around not just December 25th. Christians who embrace the ways of the world do not make YHWH a priority at anytime. The growth of mega-churches which can allow the “Believer” to: worship, hear, pay, pray and go home in one hour, 90 minutes tops is proof that Christmas is not a problem. We cannot blame an event that has been celebrated for centuries on the event when the problem is really the heart of the individual.
ROMANS 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
It is the world that promotes the idea that bigger means better and that what you had yesterday is not good enough for today. Traditional candle light church services have to be incorporated into the hip happening light flashing surround sound program presented in a timely fashion so that you will not miss the game, the appetizers or arrival of aunt so and so! If the church has incorporated the world into its’ service why do we think the members of that church will not do the same.
ONCE UPON A TIME WE CELEBRATED THE BIRTH OF THE SON OF GOD who became the son of man purely and without all the hoopla we have today. It was a time of worship, feast and fellowship. Before mass marketing, over-sized malls and Amazon, homemade gifts were the rule not the exception. Gifts were thoughtful, needed and appreciated. Gifts were presented with love not a special receipt printed in case the recipient needed to return the item.
THE PROBLEM WITH CHRISTMAS IS NOT CHRISTMAS.
In my opinion: the problem with Christmas is not Christmas. The problem, as Torah followers point out, is that Yeshua Hamashiach is not the focus, “main attraction”, of the holiday. However, I do not believe that getting rid of Christmas is the solution.
CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT LOVE
Christmas is about love not stuff, God is love. On December 25th we celebrate His love by giving to others. Many of us have forgotten that the size of our love is not based on the size of our gift.
JOHN 3:16 THE VOICE
For God expressed His love for the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not face everlasting destruction, but will have everlasting life.
When you look around at the decorations, when you see all the gifts being purchased it is possible that the gift giver is materialistic OR IT COULD BE that the gift giver has decided to make a financial sacrifice to show in a tangible way how much he or she cares about the recipient. A husband knows that presenting his wife with a car on Christmas day does not equal the amount of love he has for her. A wife knows that the super sized television she purchased for her husband may bring with it a big debt but it will also give him great joy. It is the joy that giving brings to others that motivates the giver.
MATTHEW 22:39
And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Of all the Bible verses people have quoted in support of not celebrating Christmas the second greatest commandment is not one of them. December 25th, to me, is not about giving to the church but to each other. It is not about trees, eggnog or even gifts but being with the people you love.
When you hear about all the activities around town I challenge you to adjust your perception. Those parties you hear about reflects co-workers and friends getting together and releasing the stress they have endured the past 11 months- months of struggle, heart ache, disappointment and even a goodbye to those loved ones who have graduated from earth to eternity. Social media highlights the crazy passion of men and women who want to get that one gift that they can now afford because retailers decided to wait until the day after Thanksgiving for a set number of hours it could be theirs.
If the price of that flat screen TV that people were fighting over was available August 25th in an unlimited quantity all day you would not see the madness!
Jesus reminds us that the second greatest commandment is that we love one another. Christmas is about celebrating life by loving our co-workers, those who sit next to us at the dinner table and those who live across the street. There is no greater love than the love of YESHUA HAMASHIACH, Jesus the Messiah, what we do on December 25th cannot add to or take away from His love it can only serve as a reminder to His actions.
JOHN 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
If you focus on the negative you will miss the positive. Christmas is love on steroids! People smile; people are polite, people are loving. People show their appreciation for co-workers by giving little trinkets. People show their love of family by giving gifts. We remember others by serving the homeless, visiting the incarcerated and those confined to a bed. People dress in their finest (loving themselves Matthew 22:39) and, yes, they worship the LORD.
Christmas is about love. There are those who have a “letter of the law” mindset and classify Christmas as a pagan event that followers of Yeshua should not participate in. I respectfully disagree with this idea. Of course those who are anti-Christ want to eliminate anything and everything that has to do with faith in God including Christmas. The birth of Christ is the manifestation of GOD’S love, He is the tangible gift Abba has given to us.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “NO CHRISTMAS” BECAUSE HE WAS BORN.
