NETTIE-ISM: Instead of setting yourself up for failure
DON’T MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS!
Making New Year’s Resolutions is one of those traditions that people make knowing they will not carry it out. Broken promises to yourself are the things joked about at the Christmas party. STOP!
We all have areas in our lives that need adjustment and these corrections should be made when we notice them not on the first of the new year.
Two things I do not do:
- Start reading my Bible on January 1 with the goal of finishing it on December 31.
- Make New Years Resolutions
I have read my Bible from Genesis to Revelations on more than one occasion using various translations. Most of the time I start reading in October or November and finish reading, my Bible, whenever. In my blog post NETTIE-OLOGY: NEW YEARS RESOLUTION I explain why I don’t make resolutions.
What people really need is a vision, a goal established that they can see themselves living for the rest of their lives. Being able to fit that wedding dress is not a vision but a temporary goal- clearly after the wedding there is no need to keep losing weight.
With a vision you have to have a plan and December 28 to January 1 may not be enough time to develop such a plan. My vision of eating non-GMO foods, free range non-GMO fed, non-steroid given meats is a long term vision that was started years ago- I am getting there but not there yet.
PROVERBS 29:18 THE VOICE
Where there is no vision from God, the people run wild, but those who adhere to God’s instruction know genuine happiness.
- Does God want you to lose weight? He wants you to be healthy there is a difference. (Deuteronomy 34:7, Psalm 91:16)
- Does God want you to get married? He wants you to be joined together with the right person. Abba is more particular about who we marry than we are. (Matthew 19:6)
- Does God want you to be rich? He wants you to prosper and be in health EVEN AS your soul prospers. (3 John 1:2)
I know quite a few people who will be in church, some on their knees, at midnight on New Years. Many will have made promises to themselves, resolutions, just like they did the year before, that they will not be able to keep. It is time you break the tradition since the results have been the same ole’- same ole’!
GALATIANS 6:4
But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 12 months will you be closer to that goal or were you so focused on something else that you put off doing what needs to be done?
What about that wedding dress you want to fit in? Perhaps you need to find a different dress and work on your eating habits.
Do you want to be rich but still use your credit cards like it is cash? Start planning today to buy all Christmas presents with cash. Learn to use cash or do without; pack your lunch not run to a fast food place and put it on the card. Tell your friends you cannot hang out! Tell your co-workers you cannot get together after work.
Did you make a New Year’s Resolution? Are you really going to keep it or are you lying to yourself?
